Merwin and I lived in the same building on the upper west side for 25 years. I could always tell he was nearby as I heard him beautifully whistling as he walked down the street or using using our elevator. I knew I could easily engage him in lengthy, wonderful conversation by asking "How's show biz Merwin?" He would tell me if he had good news, in terms of just being cast in a new role, with a great sense of gratitude and pride to be an actor. If he didn't have any good news, he would address also that but in a hilarious, sarcastic manner. But one thing always came through. He was SO proud to be an actor.
