I want to talk about the Not a Day Goes By interpretation (I was at this past Sunday's matinee). In the Encores version, they gave Beth that song outside of the courthouse and it has some gravitas in that way. I felt that the anger that Beth conveyed in that first version is spot on for where she is in the disintegration of her marriage in the way that's being interpreted and staged. Coming out of the courthouse, it is wistful and regretful and introspective...this one had fire and spunk and vitriol, like you kind of want Beth to finally have after Frank has been screwing around behind her back. It also then bolsters the optimism of the wedding version (and subsequently Mary's longing version of it). Three different shades and interpretations of what's a simple and pretty song.
I also agree that juxtaposing the statures of Charlie and Frank works really well; and that Franklin Shepherd Inc. was maybe one of the most thoughtful and well acted versions I've seen in a really long time (and this is coming from a wannabe Charlie).
After seeing it, I agree with another poster on here - I'll sacrifice pristine singing (you want that, go watch MFL and be kinda bored for 3 hours) for engaging and meaningful acting and interpretation any day. |
