| There is a painting at the Met which explains the Mazeppa legend. I will try to remember. There was a young knight named Mazeppa who was suppose to guard a Lord's lady. Instead he seduced her. The Lord, as punishment tied Mazeppa naked to a horse and sent him off to die in the forest. I think Sondheim named the Gypsy character after this young knight, because of the nudity angle. |
