| A striking, superb Oratorio about the Shirtwaist Fire which killed almost 150 immigrants at the beginning of the 20th Century. My wife has said that the best use of modern music is the background of stirring motion pictures. This work had a story told in photos and vintage film clips and excerpts from poems and letters of the mostly Jewish and Italian women (and a few men) who perished. If it was just the music, it would not have been as moving and visceral a work. Anthony McGills superb playing in Copland's Clarinet Concerto made this a must see evening at the NY Phil. |
