I was lucky to see this phenomenal cast in NYC last year.

Woman 1: Solea Pfeiffer
Woman 2: Shoshana Bean
Man 1: Mykal Kilgore
Man 2: Colin Donnell

Ms. Pfeiffer is a recent Michigan grad who’s been touring with HAMILTON and she was the only performer with whom I was unfamiliar. She’s a major breakout talent.

Thankfully. Mr. Kilgore has had standout moments on Broadway, but he’s rarely been able to improvise and soar the way he does here. His jazz instincts, in particular, are spine tingling. This guy is astonishing.

Shoshana Bean’s time with Postmodern Jukebox has been a gift. She seems extra ballsy with vocal choices, and they play off here. It’s never too much.

Colin Donnell has exactly the kind of voice that is blissfully masculine, and I just love it.

But for real SFANW affinionados, the new Jason Robert Brown orchestrations alone merit a close listen. The addition of a strings section plays wonderfully, and the recording quality here is leaps beyond what we got with the original cast. It’s pretty remarkable how dated this music *doesn’t* sound. JRB managed to write a score that felt undeniably contemporary at the time, but doesn't sound “90’s” now. That guy really just has talent, and when you listen to this you’re reminded why it heralded the arrival of a major musical theater writer.

Is this still Jason Robert Brown’s greatest work? That’s a fun debate to have. I think most of his fans would argue that these are some of his best best songs, and it’s thrilling to hear them performed this well.

Kudos to all involved.
