A lot of musicals with great scores fail because of 'book' problems. Most fans love scores like Mack and Mabel and Merrily We Roll Along but weak scripts kill the shows.
It has always seemed to be writing a strong musical book is the hardest thing to do in the business. Most people do not even know who wrote the book. It is always Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun, Sondheim's Funny Thing, Herman's Hello Dolly and on and on.
Am I right?
Who are the really outstanding book writers? The greats? Time to give these unseen heroes their praise. |
