Who's Right, Sondheim or Mathews?

In his book Finishing the Hat, Sondheim maintains that Dorothy Parker verses (or any light verses for that matter) are not suitable to be set to music, because they already are complete in themselves. When I read this, I was particularly upset because I had already written a whole musical, You Might as Well Live, which sets Mrs. Parker's poems to a jazz-inflected score. In my website post, I present both sides of this argument: Sondheim's position and a link to a recording of my music. I'm encouraging readers to submit their own opinions about this controversy.
