*Well.. there are "excuses." First, while the cost of one "simple" playbill may not seem like much, the cost of 5000 is money that can better be spent on something else. Second, there is the matter of the trees that have to be chopped down. Most playbills end up on the floor. Third, they can be distracting when people (as they do) look at them as the show is going on. We live in a world that increasingly functions (and thinks) digitally. In that world, the psychic benefits of holding paper (which is her "excuse" for wanting one) is just a bit too quaint. If you really need it that bad, then print it out yourself before you come to the theatre.*

The cost is still relatively very small compared to all other production elements. And even if it's not as small as I think it is, I think a printed program is not too much to expect for the prices people pay for most theater tickets nowadays.

As for the trees, I would imagine the net saving of trees that has occurred during the digital age -- with FAR fewer newspapers and magazines printed, for example -- is so great that it more than offsets the number of trees used to produce printed theater programs.

And as for your "quaint" comment, first of all, I can't believe you actually wrote anything so condescending. But at any rate, it's obviously a matter of opinion with which a great many people would passionately disagree.
