| To work well, the script must meet the music and lyrics, directing, designing, choreography, and performance to make a whole thing. Many songs can live without the book and etc. Even musical theater writers and composers most people admire---think of Rodgers and Hammerstein, for whose shows Hammerstein usually wrote the books and lyrics--sometimes did not have satisfying/successful shows. Examples of R and H shows that did not succeed in my opinion include "Flower Drum Song," "Pipe Dream," "Me and Juliet," and "Allegro." I'm sure, given that ATC is a place for opinions, some posters will decry my post because "(one of the titles on my list)" is their favorite show ever! I hope they don't miss my point. Success is more than talent and hard work. It's also a little bit of magic. (I'd add to my list of not very good Rodgers and Hammerstein shows "The Sound of Music" but 1) the book was not Hammerstein's but by Lindsay and Crouse, and 2) "SOM" IS many people's favorite show ever!) I remember going to "Nick and Nora" even tho it had been in previews for MONTHS because of Arthur Laurents, Charles Strouse, Richard Maltby Jr., Barry Bostwick, Joanna Gleason, Christine Baranski, and its source in the "Thin Man" movies. The poster is on the wall of Joe Allen's and for good reason. What a dog! Great talent, tho. And I got to see Faith Prince in her breakout Broadway role. Now, SHE was magic! |
