| Apparently somekne in WICKED’s marketing team has completely lost their mind. WICKED started promoting its score wirh cover versions a few years ago, with the hashtag #OutOfOz, and by and large, they’ve delivered perfecfly pleasant acoustic renditions that have racked up as many as 7 million views on YouTube. The concept broomstick-leapt over the shark yesterday, in the kind of hilariously awful (intentionally awful)video that they should pray DOESN’T go viral. YouTube’s ever snarky commentators are rightfully asking “is this a joke?” It MUST have been, but it’s performed so drily that you question the cluelessness of everyone involved. A boy band of Fieros, earnestly staring into the camera with puppy dog eyes while repeatedly singing “loathing” is Christopher Guest level comedy. Or is it?!? Guest always steps OVER the line so it’s plainly obvious that they were joking. This video is part of a well-established series of VERY earnest covers, so it defies logic to parody themselves now. They didn’t go FAR enough if they wanted clear laughs. Maybe it could have been saved if we’d seen the cast bust out laughing at the end. They must have wanted to baffle people to drive up shares and views. I’m going to give them that benefit of the doubt. But a lot of people won’t get the joke, and it’s just a bit embarrasing, despite the clear talent of Ashely Parker Angel, Kyle Dean Massey, and crew. What do you guys think? Brilliant or a bumbling fumble? -GMB |
