Forget the show. This was created strictly to launch A-M's movie career. You know the Maureen Stapleton story. She writes about it in A Hell of a LIfe, but the version I heard (and most entertainlngly) was as follows:
At the wrap party for the film, folks were getting up and making speeches. Janet Leigh said how delighted she was to be doing a musical, and that Ann-Margret was going to be a big star. Both Dick Van Dyke and Paul Lynde concurred, and were so glad to be able to recreate their Bway roles, and both predicted that Ann-Margret was going to be a big star. Maureen Stapleton gets up (with a few drinks in her) and (allegedly) says, "I must be the only one here who doesn't want to f*** Ann-Margret." |
