| SFANW was a showcase for a very promising but immature songwriter with wide-ranging talents. By the time of his next score for Parade, I think JRB was writing more subtle songs that are filled with subtext, making them more satisfying for me. I agree. But then he took a huge step back with L5Y, a show all about JRB himself "still hurting" and IMO not much else. I know, much as with "Songs For A Cruel [sic] World," some people love this unabashedly grandstanding side of JRB, and that's fine - I find it (and frankly, the character of Jamie) rather insufferable. So I'm glad that he seems to have finally moved on from that, and is not writing more mature shows, even if he still has yet to have a truly popular hit. I still feel that Parade has some of his best material, though I will say I'm very fond of the Bridges score as well, and I also think that Honeymoon in Vegas deserved a better reception than it got. We should also never forget that he did the truly fantastic vocal arrangements for "A New Brain" - really great work on his part. |
