I also love the contrasting scores to Bridges and Honeymoon in Vegas, as well as the vocal arrangements for A New Brain. (I think Finn's score is also one of his best.)
Where our agreement ends is with L5Y, which I think is terrific. Since it's based on JRB's failed first marriage, I think he was afraid that his true feelings about who was to blame would tilt the show too much in Jamie's favor, so maybe (from your point of view) he overcompensated by making Jamie an unsympathetic character, and Cathy more sympathetic. I may be getting this somewhat wrong, but I think I once heard JRB say, during a talk about the show, that "Cathy" was almost psychotically out-of-touch with reality during "See I'm Smiling," but that he wrote the song in a way that the audience would not see it that way. |
