It’s all so murky and shot like a “dark shadows” episode in 1970; the agitated camera work isn’t contemporary, it’s a corny cliche. No one trusts material. “JCS” worked because they knew how to translate the operatic into a camera-ready entertainment. Also - the second act has never felt so woefully unfinished, it plays like the annotations of a richer piece. The story disappears in this iteration because the camera exposes the lack of drive - characters pressing one another to achieve goals. It’s a flat update on lives, saved by wonderful songs. Here only partially saved.
