| I’m now struck with how navel gazing and privileged the characters seem, especially the two male leads. The angst over their art, their investment in their entitlement. Angel is touted as a humanitarian but all we see is her pride over enabling a dog dying. And the romantic patina intermittently thrown over heroin addiction. Mimi kvelling over her pure stash in her meet cure with Roger doesn’t feel as charming post Oxy pandenic. Heroin is now more deadly than ever and maybe the show’s almost twee association of hard drugs and urban artistic lives isn’t quite so palatable. It’s also a bit of a fantasy. I lived in NYC almost three decades and didn’t run into that vibe. Addiction isn’t a lifestyle or cool. But hey - I expect to hear that Larson didn’t think so either from posters. Yeah, yeah, I know, compassion. To me we need more compassion for efforts to deglamorize using as some kind of creative option, Phillip Seymour Hoffman flashed before me a couple of times as Mimi wiggled her ass searching for something to shoot up. Just my new take away from all in the lite iteration. Those songs are no less wonderful to spend time with. |
