I have a less extreme version of your reaction to "If I DIdn't Believe in You." It feels like Jamie's love for Cathy is conditional on her making something of her talent, but I don't know if this is intentional on JRB's part, or if it's just my reaction to the preachiness you mention.
When I first heard L5Y, I fell in love with the infectious melodies, driving rhythms, and gorgeous string arrangements, and could easily overlook any problems in the story or the characters. I'm able to forgive a lot if the songs are great - hence, my continued love for Merrily We Roll Along. |
