I saw the original CARMELINA in 1979 and have now seen all three of the York Mufti versions, with each one getting better and better.

While I modestly enjoyed the original, the fine score and some of the good scenes were offset by an uninspired production. Thankfully, the creators, along with Barry Harman, have continued to work on the show, with each version modifying the tone and adding improvement. I felt by the time of the second Mufti mounting, in 2006, CARMELINA had become a musical comedy gem. Seeing it yesterday afternoon, I can happily say that this is the best version yet. The once stodgy and overly old fashioned show is now enchanting, fresh, and hilariously funny, a show that has you laughing loudly but also tugs at the heartstrings. The score remains top notch, with the revisions working nicely to enhance the entire proceedings, and the book is unusually strong and well written. The resolution works wonderfully and proves highly satisfying, and the entire show emits a warm glow. The cast, led by Andrea Burns, Joey Sorge, and Anne L. Nathan, among others, is first rate. And, of course, any chance to see the magical "One More Walk Around the Garden," one of my all time favorite theater songs ever, performed live and in context is worth cherishing, as is the case with other favorites including "It's Time for a Love Song" and "Someone in April." CARMELINA deserves more than just a limited eleven performance run, but I'm so thankful to the York and the Mufti series for bringing this back and hope it will get a well deserved full production at the York in the not too distant future!
