I've written about this here before, but if anyone remembers the original production, a few months after opening the PLAYBILL had drawn a literal GRAPH with names of characters and how they knew each other. A whole lot of people were completely lost...

None of us knows what changes Mr. Larson might have made, but I suspect that he would have added more lines / monologues for Mark, and made that exposition nice and clear. It would be a natural place to put that information; he's already breaking the fourth wall with the changing of the seasons, and it would fit the style of it all.

The new adaptation (written by playwright Kristoffer Diaz, who wrote a touching tweet thread, link below) clearly knew that this exposition was an issue, and they made quite a few lyric changes / references to try to help the audience along. I was VERY surprised to see how many changes the Larson family permitted.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what changes were made before the 1st national tour? Someone told me that the "you can take the girl out of Hicksville" was changed to Jersey before that tour. (Why?!?)
