| Not casting understudies seems to have been the worst decision amongst many bad decisions that were made with regard to this broadcast, especially considering that there must be thousands of actors out there who've played these roles in the 20+ years since RENT opened. They could easily (and probably cheaply) brought in a handful of understudies who already knew the material to stand by for the leads, just in case. They'd learn the new staging during rehearsals and be ready to go if and when needed. Then they'd have had someone at hand to go on with a minimum of rehearsal when Roger injured himself at the dress rehearsal. If part of the cache here was the cast performing live, then they really did themselves a disservice. |
