| "Not casting understudies seems to have been the worst decision amongst many bad decisions that were made with regard to this broadcast, especially considering that there must be thousands of actors out there who've played these roles in the 20+ years since RENT opened. They could easily (and probably cheaply) brought in a handful of understudies who already knew the material to stand by for the leads, just in case. They'd learn the new staging during rehearsals and be ready to go if and when needed. Then they'd have had someone at hand to go on with a minimum of rehearsal when Roger injured himself at the dress rehearsal. If part of the cache here was the cast performing live, then they really did themselves a disservice." I agree 100 percent. On top of everything else, can you imagine the positive publicity that would have been generated by having an understudy go on at the last minute -- whether it was a name some people recognized (unlikely), or a complete unknown? That would have made the "live" aspect of the event even more exciting than usual. Not to be harsh, but not to have understudies was such an incredibly stupid decision, it's hard to believe anyone who's supposed to know what they're doing could possibly have made it. And if their explanation for the decision is, "Well, we knew if worse came to worse we could always telecast the video of the final rehearsal," my answer to that is -- what if the actor in question had been incapacitated just BEFORE the final rehearsal? I mean, seriously, what would they have done that? Just scrapped the entire telecast or rescheduled it? The economics of either of those options would have been incredibly bad. |
