I love this movie but I agree that all the stuff you mention is pretty lame. I read that the film team felt the first act climax (Hugo hitting Birdie) would work better as the film's climax and that everything should lead up to it. Film structure-wise, that isn't a bad idea, but in getting there they had to add all that Ed Sullivan-show material that feels tedious today. But generally in the movie, the songs are used more in support of character than they are in the stage play (i.e. "Put On a Happy Face" and "One Boy") and I think those were smart moves. Years ago I saw test shots of Janet Leigh in various wigs and looks while they figured out how to make her Latina, which was interesting. I also was told that the original idea of "Got a Lot of Living to Do" involved going from the restaurant out into the street and ending at a drive-in theater. Seems they ultimately made the right choice by the time they shot the number.
