| Im going to take this thread in a different direction -- I am not sure the "Live" aspect vs being taped one night earlier had ANYTHING to do with the low ratings. We as theater folks can debate this as much as we want - but I venture most of America didn't know the difference between a Live show vs a Live on Tape show -- in fact, that's how the West Coast usually watches everything "live". RENT has always been a love it or hate it show. Most community theaters, college theaters, and Large high schools across America have done it by now (and I'm, not sure it really lands well at any of them anymore) I know that Rent was a phenomenon in NYC - and in its original tour -- but it has no longer really been that big of a phenomenon nationwide. And its certainly not the type of show you sit your family down to watch together, like, say, The Sound of Music, Grease, or Peter Pan -- or with the fanatic nationwide audiences that think Jesus Christ Superstar is the finest musical ever written (see all those church and youth group field trips to every tired tour). I'm not sure that ANY production of Rent would have done well in the ratings at this point in time. This production did nothing to pull people in. I watched - no way I wasn't going to support this! But I personally didn't find a single emotional moment that pulled me in - and I teared up plenty in NYC when I saw it. I'll Cover You, the number that usually kills me -- did NOTHING in this production. I think THAT is why this was the lowest rated live show -- it just doesn't connect any more. And if it doesn't connect with me as a Director, actor, and avid musical theater goer, how is it going to connect with most of America. Okay, my two cents. |
