Not casting understudies seems to have been the worst decision among many bad decisions that were made with regard to this broadcast

I disagree on one point. Why "in regards to THIS broadcast?" Since as far as I know, NONE of the live TV musicals have had understudies, why would this one be different?

Obviously the real argument isn't "why didn't this broadcast have understudies," but "why have none of these productions had them?" Singling only this one out is really more of a Monday morning quarterbacking situation, taking the accident into account after it happened, not before.

I tend to wonder if the next one of these (and is it really honestly going to be Hair on NBC?? I still can't get my head around that) WILL have understudies. But it's clear to me that that will only happen because of this incident, not because it would generally be a good idea to have them.
