| I saw it Friday, and I also wish I could have seen it again. I saw the closing performance of the 2000 production, and much as I liked it back then, I was even more affected by it this time. Which is not to say that this was necessarily a better production, but it was a very good one. Perhaps I was more moved by it this time because I’m older, or perhaps it's because the final performance in 2000 was probably not the best performance (I think Heckart was a little off that night), or some combination of reasons. I was so moved by Elaine May's performance, to the point where I almost did something I almost never do: wait outside after to say something to an actor. But that whole experience has become so unpleasant. I waited a few minutes, but people were lining up behind the barricades, and I left. In the last play of Power Plays, she gave perhaps the funniest stage performance I've ever seen, and here she gave one of the most moving. I just wanted to quickly say that to her, but I can't deal very well with waiting in enclosed places with other people squeezed in. Perhaps it shouldn’t be, but it’s astounding to me that an 86-year-old, who I think has only once before done a play not written or co-written by her and for her, and who hasn’t really acted much onstage, could come back 20 years after she last appeared onstage and master this role so brilliantly. Btw, I am wondering if perhaps some kind of telecast is in the works. Although I saw no cameras inside, I was upstairs and might have missed them. Outside the Golden there was a truck of the sort that left me wondering if something had been filmed that night. There were a few guys outside the truck talking, and they seemed to have been involved with whatever the truck was there for, so I should have asked them, but sometimes I get shy about doing things like that. I don't think it was a TOFT filming, if something was going on, or I think that would have been announced. I hope something is in the works, and if not a telecast, perhaps a film. |
