| "The idea that they could have simply slipped in a last minute replacement or simply had Roger in a wheelchair while everyone else did their thing is ridiculous!" Having the actor play the show in a wheelchair with 24 hours notice to change the blocking would be difficult, no lie. But slipping in a last minute replacement? That happens on Broadway literally every night of the week. It's what understudies do. It's literally their entire job. I'm not sure why you think doing that would have been ridiculous. If this broadcast had hired a team of understudies, those people would likely have been with the production from the first rehearsal and would've been familiar with all the material and the blocking and the choreography. They might've even had the opportunity to do it onstage once or twice during the rehearsal process. After what happened Saturday night, I would think that the company would have been called for run-throughs of scenes with the new Roger that morning and they'd have had a full run in the afternoon with him. Then they could have gone on live as planned that evening and many people would not have known the difference. |
