So let me get this straight – you’re saying when Andy Karl got hurt in previews of Groundhog Day, his very capable understudy, Andrew Call I think, could just jump in and do the part! Easy!
No! They had to cancel a performance (maybe more than 1) so that the understudy could get up to speed.
You’re saying when Jim Parsons got hurt in previews of Boys In The Band, his very capable understudy, Matt McGrath I think, could just jump in and do the part. Easy!

I’m not an actor, or a director, but when you’re putting a show up and making changes every day to the script and the staging and the lighting and the camera angles, you’re lucky if the principals are up to speed. There’s no way an understudy is gonna be ready at the drop of a hat.
I’m sure there are some actors or stage managers on here who can fill everyone in on when understudies actually get to rehearse there parts once a show is frozen. |
