The two examples that you chose were from Broadway shows in previews. It's not customary for understudies on Broadway to get much rehearsal during the rehearsal and preview process because the show is expected to run long enough that those people start rehearsing after the show opens. But, that said, I'm sure people more versed in understudy lore than I could probably come up with many examples of understudies going on in previews on Broadway with little or no rehearsal and killing it.

The reason that's different from a live television broadcast is that the broadcast is a one night only event. So understudies, had they been hired at all, would likely have been involved in, or even just been in the room to observe and take notes on, the rehearsal process from Day 1. These would likely have been actors who'd played their roles in other productions of RENT and already knew the roles. They'd just have to learn the blocking, the choreography, and any changes to the lines for the broadcast.

Of course, a person coming in cold with no experience in the role and who had not previously been a part of the production would not be able to jump into the show in 24 hours. But that's absolutely not what I was saying would have been the most likely scenario. Go back and reread what I actually wrote.
