This Saturday's matinee of Merrily, in previews, the director came on stage before the start of performance and announced that Manu Narayan (playing the lead, Charlie) was sick. He further explained they were changing the blocking and script daily and that the understudy had never had a rehearsal, but that they were in the theater all morning plugging him in. They had a stage manager sitting in the front row in case he had to call for line (which he never did). The understudy did a fine job (I'm so sorry I don't have Playbill in front of me to give his name) in a part I would imagine (given how lyrically and musically difficult the score is) is much more difficult than the role of Roger.

He perhaps slipped up on a line or two, but had no visible issues with nervousness, nailed all his solos, didn't seem to have a problem with choreography, and this is in a 1:45 minute production with no intermission where the character never leaves the stage.

I'd say if they were prepared with an understudy, the u/s could easily have gone into RENT given they had a full day's notice.

And please note that a different actor would have absolutely no effect on the light and camera angles. That's actually how TV works. They have rehearsals with stand-ins for the stars - so they don't have to pay as much - to get the lighting and camera angles and the real actor comes in for the final shots only.

Oh, and I'm an actor who has been and understudy and a swing and I've gone on with no rehearsal as well as at intermission and mid-act. It's your job. And again, you noted very specific examples of shows in previews. And some of those cases were safety issues given very complicated sets that could potentially have caused physical harm with no rehearsal. RENT appeared to be a unit set.
