You can even go back as far as 'Ol Man River, hardly obscure though its message of protest is somewhat more obscure. But many believe it to be a protest song. Here's a quote from one of many articles that discuss that issue:
" This is a protest song, more ironic than angry perhaps, but a protest nonetheless." |
