For cinema and it brought in $1m. According to boxofficemojo it makes $784k for first showing and $902k lifetime. And that is one of the more successful broadcasts. I’m not sure how accurate the $2-4m cost really is, but it probably is a substantial number above $1m and there isn’t enough of an audience.
I’d love to see the numbers for metropolitan opera broadcasts and national theater live, which seem to have a profitable model but maybe those are subsidized with government funding or corporate sponsors which a commercial broadway production isn’t.
Hamilton would be the one production that would make millions at the cinemas. But I think a movie is in the works, so I doubt a broadcast of stage production would happen now. |
