I saw it and don't remember this. But if it's true, I'd say the reason is streamlining. They (for Sorkin) chose to jump right in with the trial rather than the slow build of the book, with Dill visiting summer after summer. Honestly I don't know that the repeat visits are that important for a stage adaptation. And this is coming from someone who was generally not a big fan of this production. I have a much longer list of things that bothered me :-)
