| I saw both the original (with Heckart) and the recently-closed one with May. Based on comments I read before the recent one, I assumed I would find the interludes (montages) between scenes too long and clunky. I didn't--the visuals did give me a sense of a changing Village (corresponding to a changing Gladys), and the slightly slower pace it produced was fine. Heck art was extraordinary in the role with a feistiness and energy that showed the contrast between body and mind--I think May made Gladys sweeter somehow. I feel privileged to have seen them both and actually surprised by the range of possibilities within the role of Gladys, who was more than a "TV" version of dementia in both productions and in Lonergan's play. Between the time I saw the Heckart and the May versions, I went through the decline (and eventual suicide) of a family member because of Alzheimer's: I was certainly a different audience member. |
