| As seen in London four weeks ago - great music, less-than-great lyrics, terrific direction, superb supporting performances from Patrick Page, André de Shields, and Amber Gray. Reeve Carney has a nice voice and can't act. Eva Noblezada has a stunning voice and can act a bit more than Mr. Carney, but that's not a high bar, and it's a problem when you're telling the story of Orpheus and Eurydice and your Orpheus is the dullest person onstage, with your Eurydice in second place. I'm glad I saw it, and I'm looking forward to seeing Rachel Chavkin's revival of The American Clock next month, but Hadestown worked better for me as music than as theatre. |
