"If Rebecca Miller's concern was that a romance between a white man and a non-white woman would whitewash the racism of 1940s suburbia, how does she justify having the town doctor and his wife being an interracial couple (Michael Hayden is white, Chinasa Ogbuagu is black)?"
It gets confusing! But I THINK Rebecca Miller's point of view is that, yes, IF the sister-and-brother characters of Ann and George had been the only actors of color in the show, it would be assumed by the audience that the CHARACTERS were supposed to be of color. Whereas if there are several other actors of color in traditionally white roles, as there have turned out to be in the final casting, then we're meant to see the casting as "color blind," and not meant to think those CHARACTERS are of color. |
