Great film. I watched it again recently. You can't necessarily tell how old people are, because people looked older back then. It seemed to me that Armfeldt was in her late 60s or early 70s and Desiree was perhaps 35; she has a young son of perhaps 6 in the film who has a, ummm, interesting name. The muiscal does leave out one terrific scene from the film involving a failed suicide attempt by Henrik, here a pianist rather than a cellist, that turns into a rather delightful surprise for him, turning potential tragedy into comedy. I wonder if Sondheim and his collaborators ever considered putting that material into the musical.
