As I have said before (1) I think the number of trees that are killed to produce the paper necessary for theater programs is relatively negligible, and is dwarfed by the net number of trees that have been saved since the rise of the Internet and the tremendous decline in the number of newspapers and magazines that are printed today (as compared to , say, 30 years ago). Not to mention a decline in the number of books printed, though I imagine that has been far less precipitous.

My impression is that a large percentage of people who receive printed programs when they attend shows hold onto those programs as keepsakes. The other night, I saw an Off-Broadway show, and on my way in, the usher asked me if I would like a program, which I think was a smart move -- provide them for the people who want them, don't give them to people who say they don't want them.

But as I've also said before, for those who DO want a printed program, I think it's an entirely reasonable expectation. To me, the reasons why a printed program is of great value to both an audience and the members of a show's company are so obvious that I'm surprised you even have to ask what prompts my strong feelings on this.
