He was apparently all about the work, turned down a knighthood, and even turned down "Lawrence of Arabia", afraid of being pigeonholed into a certain type of role and a certain type of stardom. His "Tom Jones" is especially always a treat to see, and "Two for the Road", "Murder on the Orient Express", and many others, along with his stage work, were some highlights of a great career.
