I had the pleasure of seeing Rags tonight with a revised book by David Thompson based on Joseph Stein’s original. The book now concentrates on one immigrant family unit and a mother and a son who befriend them. The students from the Program in Vocal Performance at NYU/Steinhardt are doing a fine job and the score by Charles Strouse and Stephen Schwartz sounds lovely as performed by a large cast and a 13-piece orchestra and directed with care by Gabriel Barre who acted in the original Broadway production. Two actresses are playing Rebecca and I saw Natalie Young who gives a strong, accomplished performance and will also appear on Sunday and Monday. If you have the time, I highly recommend catching this version of Rags.
