| Well, I loved this production. I'm not an expert on the evolution of the show, or the original production. I just love the score and the backwards storytelling (would love to see the play, dammit). This production is compact and fast-moving. I think the more abstract set works well. I like the not-overused employment of the "rewind" device. There are very clever costuming and other things done to incorporate the multi-tasking cast. Are these the best singers on a New York stage? No, but they are talented actors and their singing is fine overall. I found the journey (especially age-wise) believable, even with minimal physical changes. The story feels pared, but it works for me. Frank seems more sympathetic in this production. Of course, just hearing the phenomenal score performed is a delight (I did miss the overture), since I play those iconic 5 notes on my microwave every day. And, if anyone attended the talkback after yesterday's matinee, I'd appreciate a report. |
