| My last word, to go with my apology above: I'm well aware that the concept isn't tied to the Phyllis epiphany about her two sides. Sally doesn't lose her mind because she feels she's a torch singer and Buddy doesn't dress as a clown to sing about his depression. The brilliance of the Loveland conceit is the way the content is presented via stylized tropes. I fully understand why Phyllis is divided, her trauma over two ages of her self in chronological terms is her dilemma. The show takes psychological self-knowledge and places their recognition in show business-rich presentations, vaudeville, etc. |
