Reviewers are...unreliable. What is their standard? What does the review mean? Reviewers see almost everything so their standards for excellence are often compromised by the mediocrity of most theater they see. Seeing anything with a hint of quality seems endorsable to the average reviewer.
I write "mediocrity" not as a criticism, but rather, as a reflection of my worldview: 90%+ of everything in any genre is dreck. Novels. Television. Movies. And, alas, theater.
But if as a reviewer you dislike most of what you see, you become John Simon. (Joke?) |
