| I think that in the way Higgins' songs are written, and also the way they have been popularized by the recordings and film performance of Harrison, that the actual melodic line written by Loewe would actually sound new, and kind of "off" and just plain weird to audiences, if someone sang it all. "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" has a truly beautiful melody, and it was, among Higgins' songs, probably the most covered by real singers, including Ella Fitzgerald, so that could indeed be sung. I think a fine singer would probably find judiciously deciding what to sing and what to speak might yield the best results. That said, I find Hadden-Paton sings on the new recording in a less individual way than Harrison's very rich mostly speaking voice. Harrison's speaking voice was rather rangy in how he used it, plus he had excellent rhythm. |
