These one night only events are generally wonderful, and last night was no exception. The presence of the original stars, plus the conductor, several musicians, two of the "voices" chorus members, and several other people involved with the production who were also involved in the original made it particularly special. And, last night's performance was on February 11 - forty years to the day after THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG's original Broadway opening night.

Seeing Klein and Lucie recreate their original roles was a treat. Both stopped the show in the title number. Klein got most of the funny lines and he delivered them with comic authority and timing. Lucie looked and sounded amazing, and she stopped the show with her 11 o'clock number, "I Still Believe in Love," which she sang with a heartbreaking ferocity. There are moments when both stars seem to step back 40 years in time and the years have melted away, especially in their renditions of the title song. I've always liked the score, and it's a fun show. Simon's book had lots of hilarious lines that still get big laughs. But, dramatically, the story is thin. I agree with lowwriter that Leon gets tiresome. And, there are book scenes, particularly late in the first act, that drag. The show has no real emotional pull, and to me at least the minimal story hasn't aged all that well. But the show has a nice and satisfying conclusion. Overall, the laughs, the songs, the stars, and the emotional undercurrents of a 40th anniversary reunion event made for a fine night.
