I think the potential problem with singing this material is that it becomes much more difficult to get the comic timing that brings out the wit of the lyrics. The notes that Loewe wrote kind of straight-jacket you into a fixed rhythm and intonation. I'm not saying it can't be done. But the night I was there, Hadden-Paton's performances of "I'm an ordinary man" and "Hymn to him" felt flat - there was hardly a laugh and only polite applause at the end, where these numbers should bring down the house. Cutting out whole verses in both numbers didn't help either. (I realize that last remark sounds silly - like the line in Annie Hall: the restaurant's food is bad - and such small portions!)
