The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), dedicated to the development of new musicals and rediscovery of musical gems from the past, kicks off a year-long celebration of its landmark 50th Anniversary with a newly re-imagined version of the beloved Broadway hit musical I Do! I Do!, with book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, based on the play The Fourposter by Jan de Hartog. York Theatre favorite David Glenn Armstrong (York’s Roadside, Happy Hunting) is set to direct with music direction by Phil Reno (The Producers, A New Brain). I Do, I Do! will play ONE NIGHT ONLY on Monday, April 8, 2019 with a Festive Gala Reception beginning at 6:30 p.m. followed by a performance at 8:00 p.m. at the York Theatre Company at Saint Peter’s (entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue). Cast will be announced shortly.

The Festive Gala Reception is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. with a gourmet catered dinner at The York Theatre, followed by a performance at 8:00 p.m. and a desert and wine reception immediately following. The story of fifty years in one marriage is the center of I Do! I Do!, an intimate, moving, and hilarious musical comedy by the great Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones (authors of The Fantasticks and recipients of The York’s 2017 Oscar Hammerstein Award for Lifetime Achievement in Musical Theatre). Written as a star vehicle for theatre legends Mary Martin and Robert Preston, the original Broadway production ran more than a year and received seven Tony Award nominations. The show has been produced all around the country and the world in the years since.

The York’s one-night-only intimate re-imagination of the Jones and Schmidt classic will be the premiere of a new version of I Do! I Do!: two pianos, five starry couples of Broadway and York alums, and narration by the show’s legendary lyricist and librettist Tom Jones.

I Do! I Do! begins with Michael and Agnes on their wedding day. Their vows behind them, they look forward to spending the rest of their lives together. Set to a tuneful and charming score (including the hit “My Cup Runneth Over”), we watch as they maneuver through wedding night jitters, raise a family, and negotiate midlife crises. This concert version, however, is this story of two soulmates as you’ve never seen it before.

The York Theatre Company is the only theatre in New York City—and one of very few in the world—dedicated to developing and fully producing new musicals and preserving neglected, notable shows from the past. For over four decades, York’s intimate, imaginative style of producing both original and classic musicals has resulted in critical acclaim and recognition from artists and audiences alike. Under the guidance of Producing Artistic Director James Morgan since 1997, The York has focused on new musicals in its Mainstage Series—most of them world, American, or New York premieres—by some of the field’s most esteemed creators, and has also helped launch the careers of many talented new writers. Almost 40 cast recordings from The York Theatre Company productions are now available on CD, including its acclaimed revival of Closer Than Ever (2013 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Revival); commercial transfers of such York premieres as The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), Souvenir (Tony Award Nomination for actress Judy Kaye), and Jolson & Company, and revivals of Pacific Overtures and Sweeney Todd (four Tony Nominations including Best Revival) have all showcased the importance of The York and its programs. Recent New York premieres have included Marry Harry, A Taste of Things to Come, and Rothschild & Sons. The critically acclaimed musical Yank!, which received its Off-Broadway debut at The York in 2010, recently opened to rave reviews in London as did York’s Rothschild & Sons. The hit musical Cagney received its York premiere in 2015 and subsequently transferred to the Westside Theatre for over 15 months. Desperate Measures, the hit new musical from 2017, received a total of 14 award nominations that included “Best Musical” from the Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics, Drama Desk and Off-Broadway Alliance and, subsequently, transferred across town to New World Stages. Unexpected Joy, which received its Off-Broadway premiere at the York, recently completed performances at London’s Southwark Playhouse. The acclaimed new musical Midnight at The Never Get completed its run at The York on November 4th. Currently on stage is the 2019 Winter Musical in Mufti series that opened with the 1979 musical Carmelina, followed by the 1945 musical The Day Before Spring. Closing out the series is the NY premiere of the 1971 musical Lolita, My Love that begins performances February 23rd.
