| (Or however you abbreviate amplified sound through a microphone. Miced? Miked?) I saw True West last week and was puzzled by how loud, clear and even all the voices were. More curious, however, was that the people moved around the stage but the voices didn't. I haven't noticed this odd phenomenon in other straight play productions. Is this artificial quality the new norm and will we soon be blasted out of our seats like we are with musicals? |

| I think there were definitely area mics - anytime someone would walk downstage right, their voice would suddenly become a tiny bit louder ... in a slightly artificial way. I don't mind general ambient mic'ing, I just think designers have to get better at modulating it. | |

| It certainly didn't seem like the cast were wearing body mics when I saw it (from 10th row, center aisle seats). Everyone was perfectly audible, but certainly not eardrum-blasting loud. The stage seemed plugged, though. | |

| Sorry for not being clearer -- it seemed like the production was employing floor mics on stage but not individual mics worn by the actors. | |

| I don't know if this is real or just an impression, but it feels like more and more straight plays are being mic'd. I'm guessing the principal impetus is that some actors don't project well. I also find it can be a bit distancing, and I'm not a big fan of it. | |
