I've always enjoyed Natalie Wood on film but oh Lord...Bring back the Elizabeths, Taylor and Ashley. Granted Taylor had a truncated text and many takes to fashion her performance with but her Maggie was "Alive, I am Alive!" So, as I recall, was Ms. Ashley, though not quite as showy. Sweet little Natalie is a very pretty soap opera star stretching herself in this, not up to the role at all.

So excited to view this production.

I just used YouTube to watch Glass Menagerie last week...but really wanted to poll the folks here on which broadcast was their favorite, or most acclaimed? The one I chose was Katherine Hepburn, but so much of what I was searching kept referencing the production produced by Paul Newman. Anyone care to share?

I also wish I could find the thread where everyone chose their favorite movie version of a stage musical.....

I like the Hepburn one the best, but there's a lot to appreciate in the fairly recently restored TV version with Shirley Booth, Hal Holbrook, Barbara Loden, and Pat Hingle.

All I remember was Olivier's God-awful southern accent. And how bad Natalie was. I lasted about 15 minutes past Big Daddy's arrival.

I've seen numerous productions and INMHO Michael Moriarty was by far the best Gentleman Caller of them all.
The Paul Newman/Joanne Woodward version is also very well done.
AVOID the Gertrude Lawrence movie version.

I think the Hepburn version if far superior to the Woodward/Newman and, in fact, it may be the best version of THE GLASS MENAGERIE I've ever seen, with the possible exception of the Cherry Jones production.

Agree with Mr. Portantiere.
The black and white of this GLASS MENAGERIE is evocative of the past (through a glass darkly), and the casting of the young, querulous, kind Sam Waterston is perfection. Michael Moriarty gives a performance that everyone at the time, justifiably, raved about (what an actor he was!), the Laura (Joanna Miles) is good but the production isn’t tilted to focus on her. Instead, Katherine Hepburn’s multi-faceted ferocity to save and protect her children is the centerpiece. Yankee though she may be, I can’t imagine anyone surpassing the defiant optimism and consequent heartbreak Miss Hepburn brings to this role, as well as the remembered dazzle of her youthful charisma as a belle. Probably helped Hepburn (both here and with her triumph in the “Long Day’s Journey” film) that she herself had the experience of having been a much-desired beauty.
Anyway, it’s a great version.

Just one thing, the Hepburn GLASS MENAGERIE is in color, not black and white. Although the color is appropriately somewhat muted.

I have always gone back and forth about Hepburn's accent in this. Hard to explain, but I would say there is a New England sound to the timbre of her speech even though her pronunciations are convincingly Southern. A great performance, nonetheless.

A personal memory. The morning after I watched the original broadcast of this production, I took the standardized exams for graduate school admission. One of the words in the vocabulary portion was "mendacity". I couldn't help but start to laugh which brought some strange glances from my fellow test takers.
