I'm not a Wildhorn fan but I do like The Scarlet Pimpernel, perhaps because the story is well told and it doesn't take itself so seriously though it treads on Les Mis and Tale of Two Cities territory.

I thought the whole evening was a lark and the casting was just wonderful. Tony Yazbeck was not necessarily someone I would have cast in the title role but he was an inspired choice and acted and sang to a very high standard. Norm Lewis also was in fine voice though he on script most of the time. He made an effective villain who is very similar to Javert. And I loved seeing Laura Osnes and Corey Cott together again, though the latter had less to do, though they had the touching You Are My Home together. Both sounded lovely all evening. Drew Gehling, alas, did not have enough to do, though he stood out in all his appearances in a number of parts. Dana Costello was new to me and charming as another French woman. Alex Newell was underused but he was part of the rousing ensemble, all who sang their hearts out.

Gabriel Barre (who also directed Rags at NYU recently) kept everything moving at a stirring pace and though the evening ran three hours with intermission, it didn't seem long.

My main problem last night was with the sound design, which is often a problem with Manhattan Concert Productions. The singers were drowned out by the orchestra whenever the songs got rousing and the lyrics were sometimes unintelligible. I talked to the sound people in the back at intermission and things improved in Act 2.

Was the song Storybook in the show? I saw v2 on Broadway where they had moved the song to be the opening number. I never saw v1 or v3, but did see a community production where it seemed the melody had been moved back to somewhere in act II, but with completely different lyrics. I was really disappointed in that version because it's my favorite song in the show! Thanks.

“Storybook” was in the show at the beginning of Act 1 and reprised in Act 2, but “I’ll Forget You” was not in the show. And there was either a reprisal of “The Riddle” (as a solo for Marguerite) or a new song with the same melody. There was also a new duet at the end of the show for Percy and Marguerite before the curtain call.

A 'Storybook' anecdote about Wildhorn & Knighton

I've always loved ''Storybook'' from Wildhorn and Knighton's glorious score to ''The Scarlet Pimpernel,'' and I first heard Tom Andersen sing it.

Tom says many years ago, he wrote to Wildhorn, soliciting new material for his cabaret act, and Wildhorn suggested ''Storybook.'' This would've been in the early-'90s - years before ''The Scarlet Pimpernel'' opened on Broadway. It became such a signature song for Tom that other singers, like David Campbell, started to sing it in NYC, too. Knighton was blown away when she saw Tom perform it at Eighty Eight's. Asked if she might supply a quote for his press kit, Knighton penned a full-page essay about why everyone needed to hear Tom sing ''Storybook.'' That was so generous & classy!

The sound for the first 15 minutes was so bad I thought I was a concert in a stadium and not a concert hall. Things definitely improved, but I totally missed the lovely first song that Lara sang that introduced the whole thing.

I loved that I didn't know the show at all coming in and could just follow along with the fun.

All the leads were great, but it was frustrating to not have Norm Lewis off book for any more than the sword fight. Even for the final huge verse of each of his songs, he was nose in the book. He still somehow seemed to get every one of those notes, though.

I hadn't been back to one of these special events since Titanic in 2014, but am so glad I made it a point to go back this year.

I enjoyed it too. The sound did seem to improve considerably for Act Ii.

Maybe my saying something helped? I told them everyone around me had trouble making out some of the lyrics.
