| South Pacific was on TCM the other day and I found myself unable, again, to get "Happy Talk" out of my mind, one of the most infectious tunes Rodgers ever penned. Then I came across this on Wikipedia: "Happy Talk" is occasionally cut from productions of South Pacific on the grounds that the song is racist, citing the fake pidgin in which it is written.[citation needed] It was omitted from the made-for-TV remake of South Pacific" in 2001. Really? Can someone explain to me how this song is racist? The lyrics are simple but are they demeaning? I would certainly boycott any production of South Pacific that cut this song. |
