| I'd say the song's intentions, like the show's source material, are humanist and anti-racist. But so were the intentions of UNCLE TOM'S CABIN and GUNGA DIN and it's hard to argue today that either of those don't traffic in sentimentalized racism and sentimentalized anti-racism. What happened between then and now were Third World Liberation struggles which prioritized the viewpoint of the colonized over the enlightened colonizer. So yes, "Happy Talk" is probably racist to today's audiences in the absence of a talented contextual director like Sher. |
